TBE

Tick-borne Encephalitis occurs in parts of Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia. Travellers who want to enjoy the outdoors and forested areas are at risk. Transmission season is typically from March to November.

On the map, the red areas are where TBE has been reported and the yellow areas where most ticks can be found (according to Expressen in 2016).

Prevention:

Travellers who hike, camp, or enjoy outdoor activities in wooded regions should take measures to prevent tick bites.

  • Wear neutral-coloured (beige, light grey) and breathable garments, including long-sleeved shirts and pants. Tuck pants into socks.

  • When hiking avoid tall grasses and shrubs.

  • Carefully examine your body, clothing, gear, and pets for ticks when you get home.

It is recommend to get vaccinated against TBE if you venture out in the woods or visit the Stockholm archipelago. For more information ask your local practitioner.
